According to Wikipedia, Hasbro representatives went to the 1983 Tokyo Toy Show in search of toys that they could import to the North America market. At the time, Takara was showcasing several transforming robots toy lines (including Diaclone toys). Hasbro bought the rights to produce the toys and decided to produce them under one toy line: The Transformers.
